Taipei, April 28 (CNA) President Ma Ying-jeou called on Thursday the company's 28 Internet service "Yahoo Inc." to establish its regional headquarters in Asia Pacific and Taiwan, which he described as the "center of East Asia." Ma said that Taiwan was not geographically inferior to Singapore, where it lies Yahoo's regional headquarters for Southeast Asia. "We enjoy a very high competitiveness, especially in terms of our connections to the Northeast Asia," Ma said in an audience granted to the Chief Yahoo executive, Carol Bartz. On occasion, Ma also said that Taiwan Bartz was looking to become the global headquarters of Taiwanese companies with operations overseas and regional headquarters for multinational companies as well as a power of innovation in the world expressing his hope that Yahoo could offer its full assistance to Taiwan to help the country achieve the ambitious goal. The President said his administration was working to promote the opening of direct air links between Taipei and Seoul in order to turn Taiwan into a regional hub of air transport, following the launch of similar services the route between Taipei-Tokyo and Taipei-Shanghai.
Ma also stressed the geographical proximity of Taiwan with mainland China was a country that has now become the second largest economy. addition, Ma said, Taiwan's tax competitiveness was significantly elevated after the rate of corporate income tax was reduced last year from 25 percent to 17 percent, placing it at the same level as that of Hong Kong and Singapore.
